Be the Change

"Be the change you want to see in the world." -- Mahatma Ghandi

When I look around the world today there are many things I can find wrong I may disagree with the politics of our country, I weep over the public loss of life, I cringe over the atrocities of war, I get angry over the mistreatment of immigrants, my heart breaks over the inequality of the LGBTQ+ community, and in desperation I feel for the lost souls and dying babies. I sit in my chair at home debating and discussing the morality of the world but what am I doing to change the injustice I see?

What can we do to change the world around us? Does bringing awareness to an over saturated Social Media mean anything? Does this awareness bring change? Does marching around capital buildings or writing blogs change the world?

Helen Keller once said, "The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of tiny pushes of each honest worker."  Is this how change happens as well? Have we become focused on our heroes changing the world that we sit comfortably in our homes and forget about the tiny pushes? I believe change can start with one. In order for change to happen in large movements those movements start with one person.

How do we decide what we should change first with a world bogged down by troubles? Here are the steps I am going to take to change the world and maybe it will be helpful to you as well.

Step 1: Make a List

The first step I am going to take in order to change the world is write out everything I want to see changed. I have a partial list at the top of the blog but I am going to write everything I possibly can down in my personal journal that I want to see change in the world.

Step 2: Research

I truly believe everyone can make a difference but we make a bigger difference if we come together. I want to save children from starving all across the world including in my own town. There are currently organizations working to do that. If I take the time to look up the organizations already doing what I want to help with then I am able to make a greater contribution through them. It takes a ton more resources to start at ground zero.

Step 3: Take Action

Taking action has several different avenues. I can make a monetary contribution. Every organization needs help financially. This is a great way I can support a cause if I do not have time or energy to invest. Kid Bright USA helps feed kids right here in the United States. With a $30 donation you can provides snacks to one kid for an entire year.

I can donate items. Many organizations take gently used items and re purpose or refurbish them to be used elsewhere. Soles for Souls  takes used shoes and refurbishes them to donate to people around the world. Having a pair of shoes can change someone's life by preventing disease, allowing someone to work or go to school, and so many other opprotunnities.

Another way I can contribute is to donate my time through volunteering. In our area we have a problem with teen and young adult drug use. By volunteering time through the Boys and Girls Club of America we can make a difference in these teens lives before it even gets to the point they are dependent on drugs.

Step 4: Bring Awareness

Share what you are doing to help change the world. I do not mean you should share what you are doing so someone pats you on the back. Share to bring awareness of the issue. Share to encourage others to join you. Share to make your small shove just a little bit bigger.
