During the summer months we are on a tight budget. I do not work for June and July. This summer however we are taking a trip of a lifetime. We finally have a safe car and I promised my kids that once we had a safe car we would explore and see the world or at least the United States. This means we will be pinching our pennies on our amazing road trip. Here are my best tips on how to make the most of your travel plans on a limited budget.
Plan your meals and stops. If you know what you are going to eat, how much it is going to cost, and where you are going to go you can be prepared. Stick with that plan. Do not go off roading and spend a fortune because you wanted to. We have one meal out planned. We are packing meals and snacks for the trip down. We are grocery shopping for all of our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Taking advantage of sales and grocery shopping like normal helps keep our trip on budget.

Find places to visit that are free or cheap. There are thousands of museums in Michigan and Illinois that are completely free to get into or request a donation. Take advantage of these opportunities. We will be in Washington DC where over 25 museums are completely free. There are free walking tours, monuments to visit, and amazing parks. Certain museums in other states have free days. Find out what is available by visiting the museum website where you would like to visit.
Another great tip is to have a reciprocal membership at a local zoo or children's museum. We have a membership at our local zoo and it allows us to get into hundreds of other zoos for half the cost. This gives us yet another inexpensive fun day activity to enjoy when we are out on our adventures.

Be open with where you stay. We are blessed to have friends all over this great country who have graciously offered to allow us to stay in their homes. If we did not have friends to stay with we would most likely be camping. A campsite is incredibly inexpensive compared with a hotel and offers a great way to get back to nature.
