Eating on the Road

The lights of the golden arches are an easy and fast way to grab a bite to eat on the road. For me I am often left feeling terrible after this kind of stop. The greasy fries, undersized burgers, and oversized buns leave my stomach rolling. The caffeine buzz from the soda makes me go for a bit and quickly leaves me feeling burnt out. True not all fast food is created equally but this is a common experience for my family when we grab this kind of food. Not only are we left with upset stomachs but 30 minutes later I usually hear from the back seat "Mom, I'm hungry."

How do we find a way to fuel our bodies on road trips, vacations, or even after school? The only way I believe to stay true to what our bodies need is to have a plan and stick to it. For our family planning ahead has saved us money and complaints.

This does not mean we do not stop along the road to grab something to eat. Farmer's markets, fresh fruit stands, and even grocery stores are some of our favorite stops. I love going to a farmer's market and finding a local favorite. Here in our little part of Michigan we can find fresh hand pies, pasties, and goat burgers to enjoy at a fraction of the price of the drive thru. Plus supporting local businesses helps the areas you are driving through grow and thrive.

We rarely eat in our car. I find that if we eat in our car we do not pay attention to what we are putting into our bodies and the trash accumulates in the car. I am not a fan of a messy home or a cluttered car. When we are on the road I love finding a little park, throwing out a blanket and enjoying a sweet little picnic with our family. We plan foods we are going to bring and when we are going to stop along the path. Being prepared is a great way to get to know the local scenery, find out more about special cuisine, and spend quality time with your family.
