My sister and I are two completely different people. I am a planner and she is a winger. I write out lists for everything. I wake up and have a morning to do list, a regular to do list, and an evening to do list. When I'm packing to go somewhere I write everything I am going to need for every person who is going on the trip. When I plan a trip I like to have a list of destinations we are heading to and a meal plan to keep us on track budget wise.
My sister does not believe in making lists. She waits until the last minute, grabs, stuffs, and plays it all by ears. I'm a reservation girl, she is a let's wait and see girl. Needless to say we drive each other crazy. Planning for a trip takes a little bit of both of these types of people. I find that if I plan out every moment of a trip we are either overbooked or running late (another thing I hate to do.) If I do not plan anything for a trip we would miss fun opportunities, people might get bored, or we might run out of money.

For this trip I have planned a little differently. We have a limited budget. (More on how to travel on a budget in an upcoming blog.) I have made a list of experiences I would like our family to have. See the ocean, visit 10 museums or zoos, see the capital building, swim in a river, lake, and ocean, hike on a mountain, collect sea shells, see the stars, swim at night, etc. I have purposely not done anything specific other than see the capital building. Instead of doing a time schedule I think a check-list will make everyone's life easier and allow all parties involved to have a voice in the decision making. When everyone gets a say and not one person is controlling the destinations it makes the trip more enjoyable for all.
Things I have planned out with a little more detail include meals, lodging, and the nuts and bolts type of stuff. I wanted to make sure we enjoyed our trip but did not stress on what we were going to eat or where we were going to sleep. That is simply too much for my type A personality to handle. This will be the first trip where I have not written out an itinerary. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.
